Racial Disparities And Gender Disparities - 900 Words

When it comes to healthcare racial disparities continue to be an ongoing issue. In fact racial disparities have been a topic of discussion since desegregation. The US Department of Health and Human Services, in 1984 published a report that called attention to the healthcare disparities. The report was called Heath, United States 1983(Dougher, 2015). Within the context of the report there lies a passage that describes the major disparities that are within the burden of illness and death that is experienced by African Americans and other minorities, â€Å"despite significant progress in the overall health of the nation† (Dougher, 2015). It was evident that there was a serious lack of health care minorities. Low income neighborhoods are still witnessing a rising gap in healthcare coverage. For example, patients with diabetes are more likely to undergo limb amputation than those in higher income areas (Pearl, 2015). Also, research has shown the Caucasians women have and overall in cidence of breast cancer that is higher than that of African American women (Williams, Mohammed, Leavell, Collins, 2010). On the contrary there is a higher death rate of breast cancer in African American women than in Caucasians women. African American women are diagnosed with breast cancer at a rate of one-in-ten. Caucasian women see a rate of 1-in-8 however, 1-in-31 African American women are found die from their illness where 1-in-37 Caucasian die from breast cancer (ASPCS, 2014).
